our mission:
To reduce food waste in Yale dining halls, all the while giving back to the community.
The main purpose of Kitchen to Kitchen (K2K) is to reduce the amount of waste generated in Yale Dining Halls. Each weekday (except for Friday), we deliver extra food from the dining halls to the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (called DESK). DESK aims to serve those living in poverty or facing homelessness by providing food assistance and services that promote health, community, and equity. Through help from K2K, DESK provides nutritious evening meals along with a safe and welcoming space for all.
We are a small project, with about 15-20 devoted volunteers each semester. Each volunteer dedicates 1-2 hours a week to complete their run and make a big difference in New Haven. If you are interested in food rescue, environmental justice, or volunteerism, consider volunteering for K2K!
How to get involved:
Become a weekly runner between Yale and DESK.
Volunteers for K2K are chosen at the beginning of each semester. According to their availability, they will be assigned to a “run” that occurs from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday through Thursday. Every volunteer will be assigned to a partner with whom they will complete their run each week. Though it is not required, we prefer that all volunteers be able to drive. If you are interested in receiving information about volunteering, reach out to a K2K project head!
